I read an email message indicating the tickets were going fast. I would suggest that you call Gayle Thomas at once at 416-901-5757 or email her at thomasgayle@hotmail.com. She can tell you if tickets can be bought somewhere on Lake Shore Blvd. West.

I had the impression that the land that remained, at the time when the buildings were torn down in the mid-1950s, were all part of the Smith homestead.

I had the impression the Smith house, the outbuilding immediately to the north of it, and the barns to the south of the Smith house were all part of the same property.

I would be most interested in details from archival records or the like indicating that the barns were adjacent to, but not actually on, the Smith homestead property.

I would add that your initiative, as president of the Long Branch Historical Society in the 1980s, in arranging for a preliminary archaeological survey of the site in 1984, was a key factor in the 'good news' story that emerged in 2011, when the provincial government provided $5.2 million to enable the Parkview School property, on which the archaeological remains of the Smith homestead are located, to remain in public hands.

This is the first time that Mike James and Jaan Pill have organized a Jane's Walk in Long Branch. For a future Jane's Walk, we'll keep in mind your comment. As you note, a Saturday would be better for some people. We chose Sunday because we heard that this is an especially good day for some people.

There is a Jane's Walk in Mimico on Saturday, May. 5, 2012. It starts at 11:00 am and goes until 1:00 pm.

I recall reading a copy of the text of Alice Munro's 1982 article about how she approaches the reading of a short story. I was so impressed when I read it. I've been using her approach -- in my case with regard to the reading of non-fiction books from the Toronto Public Library -- ever since.

I have so far not been able to track down the article. I will keeep on looking.

At this point, the best source regarding the contents of the article is found at the beginning of the following CBC interview featuring Alice Munro:

I am very pleased to know of grant money that the United Church has available for greening initiatives.

I'm reminded of such greening initiatives involving another church in Toronto.

I will share that information at this website as soon as I've had time to write up my notes of a conservation that I had recently, at the Birds and Beans Café by the Lake in Mimico, with Fran Moscall, Director, Ontario Urban Forest Council.

The United Church has some grant money available to congregations for development. Applications should keep in mind some of the many greening initiatives that the United Church supports. Any groups working with the Board of Wesley Mimico United Church should be aware of these funds and be sure the congregation's leadership is working with the General Council Office to facilitate communications between all stakeholders.
I work at the General Council Office, and can put your group in touch with this information, if the congregation has not done this already.
All the best,
Martha
