We’ve bought a house in Stratford, Ontario

A previous post is entitled: Most recent rental was a four-level cottage along a steep, heavily forested hillside at a lakeside in Ontario

We are pleased to add that we have bought an early-1900s house in Stratford, Ontario. It’s been a long process with extensive research and it has turned out well. We owe special thanks to Nona Patterson, Broker, of Home and Company Real Estate in Stratford.

The Festival Theatre, designed by architect Robert Fairfield in close consultation with the Stratford Festival board of directors and theatre staff, was awarded the Vincent Massey Gold Medal for Architecture in 1958. The theatre features a thrust stage. Jaan Pill photo

We found in our experience as sellers that the competition for houses, among people seeking to buy houses in Toronto (in particular in Long Branch, where we had lived for 21 years) was very fierce. In selling our house we worked in close collaboration with Angela, Paul, and Laura Giroudy, Sales Representatives, Royal LePage Real Estate at Bloor St. West and Royal York in Toronto.

The competition for houses, at a price range and with features that appeal to buyers from Toronto (by way of example), was slightly less fierce in Stratford but competitive nonetheless. We received some great advice from (among other sources) Nona Patterson: “When you see the house you want, act quickly.”

Thank you David. From our new Stratford home, I will focus on my role as a ‘foreign correspondent’ writing about local history and land-use decision making in south Etobicoke and the Mississauga waterfront.

On a related topic, it’s great that you are helping out with Pamela Gough’s campaign for the local councillor position. I look forward to helping out with social media efforts on behalf of her campaign.

Along with then-MPP Laurel Broten, Pamela Gough played a key role in keeping Parkview School in public hands some years ago. That was a significant event for all of the residents living in the immediate area, and for all of the residents of Long Branch viewed as a community. Such local politicians warrant the strong support of local residents.

The lake we’re at is Sandy Lake north of Peterborough. It’s wonderful to be reminded of your home at Sauble Beach on Lake Huron. I remember you talking, with great fondness, about Sauble Beach.
