Inaugural Jean Augustine Legacy Award Dinner on Saturday February 22 at Lakeshore Commons at Humber College

The Inaugural Jean Augustine Legacy Award Dinner will be held on Saturday February 22, 2014 at Lakeshore Commons at Humber College.

The following text is based on an email from TDSB Trustee Pamela Gough:

Among the many distinguished attendees is TDSB Director Donna Quan and City of Toronto Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly.

The proceeds of this event will go to establishing a scholarship program in Jean Augustine’s name for one Etobicoke-Lakeshore student each year to attend Humber College for a full degree or diploma program.

This award is being sponsored by LAMP Community Health Centre and is supported by Humber College. It is being created to honour an outstanding Canadian – Jean Augustine, a former Member of Parliament for Etobicoke-Lakeshore and the current Fairness Commissioner of Ontario.

The award will be bestowed yearly on a student with traits that emulate Jean: a young person with the courage and spirit to overcome barriers against all odds, while enriching people – a person who values social justice, who champions positive social change in the community, and who makes a positive difference in the lives of others through various acts of kindness and contributions to the community.

Jean came to Canada from Grenada long ago with $25 and a suitcase. She started as a domestic, became a teacher and school principal, then entered politics at the federal level to become Canada’s first black women MP. She initiated Black History Month on a national level and is a member of the Order of Canada. Her story is inspirational.

The scholarship fund she is establishing now is fully in keeping with her goals of social justice and honours her roots in education and our community.

As Jean herself said to me [that is, Trustee Gough] a couple of weeks ago, sometimes in life an opportunity opens up that changes your pathway altogether, and give you the chance to do things that you had thought were beyond your grasp. The Jean Augustine Legacy fund is being established to provide that sort of opportunity to a young person in our community. I [Pamela Gough] encourage you to help make it happen.

Please join Director Quan and many other community leaders on Saturday February 22 starting at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $100.00 per person.
