Jim Carr

I first got to know Jim Carr at Sir Adam Beck Junior School. He was a parent actively involved in the life of the school. What stood out was his enthusiasm, active involvement, and good nature.

I met him from time to time in subsequent years at John English Junior Middle School – and at meetings involving bicycle committees and a wide range of other community meetings.

I had been thinking of taking him up on his offer for me to visit him sometime at the Lakeshore Yacht Club but time had slipped by. In the end, I did not have the opportunity to follow-up on the invitation.

He was a delightfully civic minded individual. I remember how pleased he was that a bike rack had finally been installed at the NoFrills store at Brown’s Line and Lake Shore Blvd. West. I remember attending bicycle committee meetings with him. He was always well organized and focused on the next steps.

I was looking forward to meeting him to learn more about the Lakeshore Yacht Club of which he was a member. He spoke with enthusiasm about the history of the club and the principles on which it was based.

I never had the opportunity to meet with him at the club. However, I much enjoyed a couple of weeks of working with him, by email, on a resume for a conservation management position that he was applying for, in Buffalo. He turned to me because he knew I have skills in writing. I was happy to help out. We enjoyed working on the writing project together. Mainly, I provided feedback on his drafts and shared some insights about cover letters.

I last spoke with him on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 when we both attended the All Candidates Meeting at Lambton Kingsway Junior Middle School.

Jim’s enthusiasm for cycling, for active involvement in his children’s schools, for working in harmony with nature, and for making the community a better place for people of all ages – including children of all ages – are things that will stay with me. He was a good man, a good family man, a good citizen. He will be missed. He will remain a strong source of inspiration for those of us who had the opportunity to know him, and to work with him in pursuit of shared objectives.

It’s wonderful to read your message, Manny.

I look forward to sharing information about plans to commemorate Jim’s life. There are plans to hold a memorial bike ride, as I understand. As well, a bike rack was recently opened at John English Junior Middle School, an event that Jim would have been delighted to have known about.

He was a good man. He will be remembered. He remains in our thoughts. His work will be carried on by those who remember him, and who worked with him on many projects on behalf of the wider community.
