MCHS 2015: Toronto attractions include Harbourfront and the Waterfront
To the west of Long Branch in Lakeview in Mississauga, just west of Dixie Road and Lakeshore Road East, you will come across a small creek called Applewood Creek. I mention it because it reminds me of a creek that used to run through Cartierville in Montreal 50 years ago, as posts about Cartierville at this website have noted over the past couple of years.
I live with my family in Long Branch in South Etobicoke. Where we live still has a touch of the rural scene attached to it, but it’s only 20 minutes to downtown Toronto, which is primarily an urban scene.
Long Branch is a short ways to the south of the Stay Inn, so that if you are staying at the latter hotel during the Oct. 17 MCHS 2015 reunion weekend, you will have the chance to visit along Lake Shore Blvd. West in Long Branch if you are so inclined. It’s a good way to see gentrification, with all of its characteristic qualities, and philosophical and cultural ramifications, manifesting itself.
The vertical dumbbell rack is a standard piece of Long Branch furniture. Many people my age, who live in Long Branch, spend their spare time lifting weights, as I do. That is, people work out every second day, so that there is sufficient time to rest between each day of workouts.
It’s easy to find Lake Shore Blvd. West from Evans Ave. and the East Mall, which is where the Stay Inn is located. You simply travel south along Brown’s Line, from Evans to Lake Shore.
Iron Chef
In a previous post I had another view of a new Tim Horton’s that has opened up on Lake Shore Blvd. West in Long Branch, part of an ongoing process of gentrification that local residents have been hearing about for the past 20 years. This is a view toward the north, from the new coffee shop. What is now a coffee cup was previously a bucket of KFC chicken.
The current post features some photos from the past weekend at Harbourfront in Toronto. If you find your way to Toronto for the Oct. 17 MCHS ’60s Reunion, Harbourfront is among the options that you may wish to visit, during your weekend stay.
The International Iron Chef Competition that we took in at Harbourfront was a lot of fun. I marvelled at the fancy video camera, the lighting setup and sound system that was in place, and at how well organized the entire routine of the competition, complete with a panel of judges and an enthusiastic audience, was.
We found it was a great experience to visit downtown Toronto this past weekend.
If you’re driving, watch out for the Do Not Enter signs. The streets in this area can appear to be like a labyrinth, for those of us not used to driving in Toronto. I live in the outskirts of Toronto. I seldom drive downtown. where it’s: One wrong turn and you’re dead.
That is: Be alert. Arrive alive.
The gray building – now known as the InterContinental Toronto Centre, at that time known as the Crowne Plaza Hotel – in the middle of the background was where I helped to organize a national conference in 1995, run entirely by volunteers. The budget was about 45K; it would be around 90K now. We all had a good time. That’s the point, right?
